David Finkel- A Speech Above

Author of the book Thank You For Your Service David Finkel came to University of Delaware to discuss the book all FYE students had to read. He traveled to Iraq to see what the war was like, and detailed a description based on the soldiers return to America. All of the lives chronicled here describe the real truth to coming home from war, such as living with failed marriages, and PTSD. Finkel’s words captivated the 650 students that went to see him, and were chilled when we were reminded that a lot of the soldiers in the Iraq war are our age. Finkel concluded his speech with the idea that the book was written for one purpose, and that purpose was to help readers understand exactly what the men and women who put their lives on the line go through, and remind us that we should all be thankful to be free, and safe.

Be Careful With Your Things!

On Friday around lunchtime, a man named Carlton Kilson came onto the North Green on the campus of University of Delaware. He approached a young woman, and knocked her to the ground, upon which he stole her laptop. Thankfully, she was able to recover quickly enough to chase him onto Man Street, and a multitude of bystander assisted too, calling the police and running down the street as well. Eventually, Kilson was trapped and threw the laptop at the woman, and was shortly after arrested by the police. It is important to always have electronics stored away in public, and if an incident like this occurs in view, it is important to help the victim, because bystanders were a main reason she was safe, and given back her laptop.

A Bad Week For Dover’s Crime Rates

Crime rates in Delaware have gone up astonishingly this past week officials from Dover are saying, especially after the past three years when crime rate had significantly dropped. Last week alone there have been four shootings, all resulting in injuries requiring hospitalization, and even death. The first of these incidents occurred with a man named Yusif, who was shot after beginning an argument with another man named Shamarr. Officials all came to the consensus that Shamarr had been acting in self defense, as he fought off his attackers. Other gun-related incidents occurred to a man and a woman who had been leaving a party, and shots were fired, killing the man and injuring the woman. The most recent attack, the fourth in four days, happened when a man was walking home from work, and was asked what his name was. Upon giving the answer, he was shot in the foot for no reason. This event happened only hours before city officials were hosting a press conference to debate upon how to settle this pressing matter. Authorities were having a press conference that night to decide the correct actions to take, and the best ways to keep the population of Delaware safe. Officials said they were working hard to keep the Dover community safe, and are asking the public to help with any information that would lead to the capture of the shooters.

Lauren

My name is Lauren Goldenberg, and I am from just outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I am currently undecided through the school, but I have recently decided to switch my major as soon as I can to Criminal Justice. Law school is probably the next step in my education, but I am not positive about the specific career I would like to have. Along that same note, my favorite things to read are murder-mystery novels, especially by James Patterson and Harlan Coben. I read often, and I believe these books were factors that contributed heavily to my future career plans.
